Extremity Adjusting

Is a focus on improving joint function, reducing pain, and enhancing overall biomechanics. While chiropractic is best known for spinal adjustments, extremity adjusting helps issues related to the joints of the arms and legs and Jaw.

What Is Extremity Adjusting?

Extremity adjusting is a subset of chiropractic care that involves manipulating joints outside the spine, such as:

  • Shoulders

  • Elbows

  • Wrists

  • Hips

  • Knees

  • Ankles

  • Feet

  • TMJ

This technique addresses joint dysfunctions, misalignments, or restrictions in movement in the extremities. Conditions commonly treated include:

  • Shoulder impingement

  • Tennis elbow or golfer's elbow

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Runner’s knee

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Ankle sprains

  • Hip alignment issues

  • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)

How Are Extremity Adjustments Performed?

The chiropractor will assess the joint’s range of motion, alignment, and stability. If dysfunction is found, a manual adjustment—typically a quick, controlled thrust—may be applied to restore proper joint mechanics. Some use instruments or mobilization techniques instead of (or in addition to) hands-on methods.

Benefits of Extremity Adjusting

  • Improved joint function and mobility

  • Reduced pain and stiffness

  • Enhanced athletic performance

  • Prevention of overuse injuries

  • Better biomechanics for daily movement or sports

Is It Safe?

When performed by our licensed chiropractor trained in extremity adjusting, it is generally safe and effective. Like any manual therapy, minor soreness or discomfort may follow a session but typically resolves quickly.

Who Should Consider It?

You might benefit from extremity adjusting if you:

  • Have chronic joint pain not related to the spine

  • Are an athlete looking to improve movement efficiency

  • Suffer from repetitive strain injuries

  • Are recovering from a joint sprain or imbalance
